Frequently Asked Questions — and Answers!

Where are you located? What is your cross street?
We are located in the Richmond district of San Francisco at 2010 Balboa at 21st Avenue.

Do you offer private lessons?
Yes! Private classes with out-of-town instructors are often listed in the Classes section, but please feel free to directly to ask about lessons with our local teachers. Private lessons are $50 per hour.

Do you have gift certificates?
Gift certificates are available for purchase; they are valid for one year from date of issue.

Can I bring my own sewing machine?
All students are welcome to bring her or his own sewing machine or serger to class, although we provide machines for your use here (Bernina 125, 135, and 145s). We expect students to treat the machines with the utmost respect. Please report any problems to your instructor immediately, and do not force the machines if they resist! Students are expected to bring their own sewing notions and supplies. Please realize that we only give instruction in the use of TSW's machines. To teach each student to use their individual machine would eat up the whole of class time! Perhaps you'd like not to bring your machine the first day, to see about using our machines in class and applying what you learn at home.

Where do I park?
TSW is located in a residential neighborhood. We do not have a parking lot, so our students must use street parking. Generally, students are able to find parking within two blocks walking distance. If you're having trouble, we recommended looking for spaces away from Geary Boulevard, south towards Golden Gate Park. If you have a load to carry, we recommend double-parking in front of the workshop to drop off your materials, then looking for parking.

If I come from out of the area, where can I stay to be close to the school?
We have a list of recommended accommodations (PDF, 72Kb). (You may need to download Adobe Reader.)

Can you recommend a good seamstress or sample-maker?
We often get calls asking if we can do people's mending. As we are a school, we cannot provide this service, but we can teach you how! However, we do recommend two highly experienced, local seamstresses for their skill and service. If you are looking for a seamstress or sample-maker, please contact Lynne Gallagher of Galigula/Wee Scotty at (415) 345-9200 or Wendy Miller of Frippery at (415) 648-8514.
